EU/UN’s Spotlight Initiative

The Spotlight Initiative is an EU/UN partnership, and a global, multi-year initiative focused on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls – the world’s largest targeted effort to end all forms of violence against women and girls.

Spotlight Initiative is working with governments, civil society organizations, the media and other partners to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls by 2030.

Launched with a seed funding commitment of €500 million from the European Union, the Spotlight Initiative represents an unprecedented global effort to invest in gender equality as a precondition and driver for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Spotlight Initiative is responding to all forms of violence against women and girls, with a particular focus on domestic and family violence, sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices, femicide, trafficking in human beings and sexual and economic (labour) exploitation.

Spotlight Initiative interventions focus on four mutually-reinforcing programming pillars:

1.Laws, policies and institutions 2. Prevention 3. Response 4. Local civil society and women’s movements

Spotlight Initiative’s partnership with civil society is guided by:

A human-rights based approach; The “Leaving No One Behind” principle, and National ownership

The #WithHer campaign raises awareness about gender-based violence and global efforts to address the issue using the hashtag #WithHer.
