Established in 2000, the Australian Centre for Leadership for Women holds a strong position in the landscape of women and leadership in Australia and internationally. The distinctive identity of ACLW has emerged from recognising and enabling diverse women’ leadership, enabling organisations to develop the leadership potential of women, enabling systemic change to address barriers for women, making visible the achievements of primarily female global leaders, in diverse areas including business, education, not-for-profit and government; and ensuring women from marginalised groups are recognised and visibly engaged as leaders.
ACLW advocates and supports NGOs on relevant issues to advance gender equality. It has also done this through research, publications, and developing the capacity of leaders and emerging leaders through coaching and mentoring. ACLW has pioneered national leadership awards for women from diverse backgrounds and recognise women and men who advocate for women in organisations and in the community.
The ACLW name reflects its distinctive identity among national and international virtual organisations for women.

The four key values of ACLW are:
- Integrity
- Impact
- Insight
- Intrepid
